Making Tax Digital and accountancy questions, answered
Short, straight answers to the things Cornish sole traders and landlords ask us most.
What is Making Tax Digital?
- Making Tax Digital (MTD) is HMRC’s system for keeping tax records digitally and reporting income every quarter instead of once a year. For sole traders and landlords it means using HMRC-recognised software, sending four short updates a year, and confirming the figures with a final declaration after the tax year ends.
Who does MTD apply to in 2026?
- From April 2026, MTD for Income Tax applies to sole traders and landlords whose combined self-employment turnover and gross rental income was over £50,000 in the 2024/25 tax year. The threshold falls to £30,000 in April 2027 and is expected to reach £20,000 in April 2028.
Do landlords need to comply with MTD?
- Yes — landlords are included, because gross rental income counts towards the MTD threshold. It applies whether you let one flat or a whole portfolio, and joint owners count their own share of the rent.
How much does an accountant cost in Cornwall?
- Fees depend on the work involved, so we quote for each client rather than publish a single price. Our quotes are fixed and agreed in advance, all prices are plus VAT, and the initial MTD readiness check is free with no obligation.
Where are you based and who do you work with?
- We are based at Kernow House, Water-Ma-Trout, Helston, Cornwall TR13 0LW, and work with sole traders, landlords and small businesses across Cornwall. You can call us on 01326 377104 or email info@kernow.ltd.
